St Matthew's Church was consecrated in 1837 to be the parish church for the new parish of Richhill. The building itself was repurposed from its prior existence as the market house for the village, which had been built in 1752.
The authentic sound of Richhill comes from the tower of St Matthew's Church. The clock and four bells were installed in 1959 in memory of the Rowntree family. Every quarter hour, the bells produce the distinctive 'Richhill chime' which was composed by the then Rector, Rev Canon John Cockerill.
